SMS Alert Notification Consent

How licensed healthcare providers opt in to patient alert notifications (Connect), and how school and workplace organizations enroll participants in the Protect safety alert program.

Looking for VetProtect (veteran support) text messaging? See VetProtect SMS Consent. This page covers the Connect provider and Protect school & workplace programs.

About This Messaging Program

Active SOS operates a closed, business-to-business (B2B) patient alert notification platform exclusively for registered medical practices. This is not a consumer marketing service. No promotional, advertising, or solicitation messages are sent through this program.

When a patient sends a health alert through the Active SOS mobile app, that alert can be forwarded as an SMS notification to the registered physician or designated on-call medical staff at the patient's practice — but only if that provider has individually and voluntarily opted in to receive SMS notifications.

SMS notifications are entirely optional. Providers can create an account, complete onboarding, log in to the portal, manage patients, review alerts, and use all platform features without ever opting in to SMS. Declining SMS consent does not restrict access to any feature.

All SMS recipients are:

  • Licensed physicians or authorized medical staff employed by a registered medical practice
  • Individually enrolled in the Active SOS Provider Portal by the practice administrator
  • Opted in voluntarily via an unchecked checkbox on their Profile page after account creation
  • Able to opt out at any time by replying STOP or updating their Profile settings

How Consent Is Collected

Consent is collected in the Active SOS Provider Portal on the My Profile page, which is accessible at any time after account creation. Each provider who wishes to receive patient alert SMS messages individually checks an optional consent checkbox on their profile.

The SMS consent checkbox is unchecked by default and is entirely separate from the Terms of Service acceptance. Providers may accept the Terms of Service and create their account without selecting the SMS checkbox. They may opt in later — or never — without affecting their access to the platform in any way.

Account creation does not require SMS consent. A provider cannot receive SMS messages until they have individually and voluntarily checked the consent box on their Profile page. No SMS messages are sent before that action is taken.

The following is a representative example of the consent form as it appears in the Active SOS Provider Portal on the My Profile page:

First Name
Enter first name
Last Name

Practice Mobile Number (used for alert notifications if SMS is enabled)
+1 (___) ___-____

Protect Safety Alert Program — Institutional Enrollment

The Active SOS Protect platform serves K-12 schools, colleges, and workplace organizations that need an institutionally-managed safety alert system. Unlike the Connect provider program above, Protect uses an institutional enrollment model — authorized administrators configure the program and enroll participants; individual recipients do not self-register through a consumer portal.

Who enrolls phone numbers in Protect? An authorized administrator — school safety officer, principal, HR director, or similar — logs in to the Protect administrative portal and enters the phone numbers of students, staff, or workers who are part of the safety program. This is done under the institution's own consent agreements, enrollment processes, and — for K-12 schools — applicable FERPA obligations.

All Protect SMS recipients are:

  • Students, staff, or workers enrolled by an authorized institutional administrator
  • Associated with a school or organization with a signed Active SOS service agreement
  • Enrolled pursuant to the institution's own consent and notification processes
  • Able to opt out at any time by replying STOP to any Active SOS Protect message

Protect SMS Message Types

The Protect program delivers the following types of SMS messages:

  • Anonymous safety tip acknowledgments — Confirming a tip was received by the school safety team
  • Check-in / check-out confirmations — Automated acknowledgments for worker check-in and check-out safety records (workplace programs)
  • Safety alerts — Critical campus or workplace safety notifications authorized by the institution
  • Overdue check-in alerts — Automated escalation messages when a worker has not checked out within their scheduled window (workplace programs)
